Folks.
This is an update to the old "Ironman" training weekend thread.
As you might know, I'm planning on running a residential training camp at Millfield School in Somerset from the 8th to the 11th of April next year. Millfield School is a private school with fantastic sports facilities located very close to Glastonbury in Somerset. The course will be aimed at people who have an interest in long distance triathlons. This could mean that you are doing you first (or any) Ironman or Half Ironman in 2005, or that you are considering entering an Ironman and would like to know more about what's involved.
I am currently awaiting final confirmation from Millfield about the booking, but as soon as that's through it's all systems go on planning the course, determining a final price for the course, and then getting people to sign up.
For the course to be able to run, we need at least 20 people. We also have to book for at least 3 nights. I think this means (although I have to confirm this) that we get three days (not four) use of the facilities at Millfield. This might mean running the course on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday, or Saturday, Sunday, Monday if you catch my drift.
At the moment, I'm looking at there being three coaches, myself (7 times Ironman finisher ) , Mike (ironmanUK, is that 35 Ironman finishes now!? ), and hopefully one other.
So far, the course content looks something like this...
- Planning your training. The do's and dont's.
- Recovery, why it's so important, how to improve yours.
- Bike fit, with external speaker from www.cyclefit.co.uk (TBC).
- Sports Psychology (external speaker TBC).
- Swimming, stroke analysis, video sessions.
- Open water technique (although I'm not planning on doing any open water sessions as it will still be freezing!)
- Suggested training sessions swim, bike (including turbo training) and run.
- Riding technique
- Training swims, bikes and runs. (the cycling is very good in the local area)
- Group turbo session! (Dre to provide German Techno Music )
- Race week do's and dont's
- Race strategy, pacing and nutrition
- There is also the possiblility of checking out the Ironman UK course. This could be a ride round the route depending on whether it's a 1 or 2 lap course. Sherbourne is around 30 miles from Millfield. We could also hire a minibus and drive the route if there are enough people interested.
If you have any other suggestions of stuff you'd like to see in the "time-table", let me know.
If you are interested in attending the course (subject to me working out the final cost), can you let me know so I can start to get an idea if it's going to be a go-er or not!

Doooood ! Count me in ! - I dont mind using a days holiday either.
(I will have to watch costs though thats the only thing. So we need lost of peeps to make it cheaper)
Yep, Keeping the cost as low as possible will be a priority.
The cost per person, per night of the accomodation is £35.25 (full board!).
The other stuff we have to pay for is, lifeguard (£8 per hour), lecture room (£26 per hour), insurance, possibly the use of a gym/room for turbo sessions. and any external speakers.
I'll try and group the sessions that incur the biggest cost (ie ones that we need the lecture room for, so that we're all in there together. Stuff like swimming, where we get use of two lanes of a 50m pool for up to 4 hours per day, we can split the groups so there's more room for people.

Redbiker - If the video swim sessions are not part of the Millfield package, I would be more than happy to bring my digi camcorder/portable TV so that we can record stroke analysis, etc, and get playback in a plenary session afterwards. I also have a DVD recorder at home and could burn as many disks as people wanted so that they have a permanent record of their swim skills (or not as the case may be!). The only condition would be that this was all done on the one day so that I wouldn't have to stay overnight. Let me know (by PM) if your are interested.

Redbiker - I would be very keen. At that time I will be 5 weeks (ish) away from my very first attempt at Ironman so could prove invaluable.
Would be very keen to ride the full IM UK bike course as well as I wouldn't want to miss one of my long rides at such an important stage of the training.
Does all look very good though, I would not be able to stay if it went into Monday as I'm paid by the hour at work. No show. No dough
I said to Andy that I'd like some long runs and long bikes for this training weekend and he quite rightly pointed out that it'd take a huge chunk out of the weekend to do a 100 mile ride. Especially when you've paid for the use of Millfield School and it's just sitting there. Time might be better spent using the School facilities. It would also take a huge amount of energy for people who aren't going racing for another 4 months.
Having said that, I'm not sure I can make it for the weekend but can get there for a day so if you want a riding partner for the day (or any other day come to that) to sight the IMUK course, give me a shout.

In a somewhat related way, would people be interested in "big weekend" type training in the run ups to IM's.
i.e. one location where over a weekend a long swim, one or two long bikes and a long run were done as a group.
Would that interest anyone?
