Hi all, many of you will already be aware that united utilities have cancelled the Rivington triathlon this year over 'safety' concerns and also by allowing such events it encourages unauthorised / illegal swimming in their waters..... Albeit, they're happy to allow a mass start of 1500 swimmers at IMUK

We've had a lot of publicity (certainly in the northwest) over the last few days and i'm told that united utilities aren't happy... what a shame!

Here's something from the manchester evening news....

http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/s/1101828_triathletes_banned_from_reservoir

I've also been pestering Gerry Sutcliffe, the government sports minister to see if there's any interest from a national perspective.... nothing back yet though so either he's very busy or he's nothing to gain politically!

Was just wondering if anyone out there might fancy lending some support in trying to get the race reinstated by writing to MPs / newspapers etc or pursuing any other avenue to embarrass united utilities into a u-turn?

Thanks in advance

I'd have thought this falls under Sutcliffe's remit

He'd be better placed putting time into sports that we are definitely going to have representation for in 2012.

If anyone fancies backing me up, you could email Gerry on sutcliffeg@parliament.uk but please keep it constructive towards the reinstatement of the race..... you can abuse him all you want after that!

Cheers,

Bernard Nolan. Bolton Tri Club

Well now its out in the open.If UU had been upfront and said btclub you are out IMUK is in it would have been a bitter pill to swallow, but at least honest. But to spout all this health safety( we don,t want people swimming in open water)rubish and then let 1500 triathletes compete, and it will be on tv some time, how many people watching (OO LOOK WE CAN SWIM IN RIVI RES ITS ON TV MOST BE OKAY)ARRRGH time for chill pill.
How many medals in 10k swim doo.Dont they make lots of money charging us for water, but you can,t swim in it.To me they (UU have shot themselves in the foot).but dont make af uss or else is that a threat?.
bit late now ,rant rant rant.IT,S ONLY A TRIATHLON.

Mass trespass I say same problem exists over here with Yorkshire Water.

There is no evidence people seeing an organised swim with safety cover will lead to people just jumping in and drowning. On the contrary it probably makes people think twice after seeing it been done in an organised manner.

The Bolton evening news have picked it up also...

http://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/news/4195501.Popular_triathlon_event_sunk/

Come on help us out.... For those of you in the northwest who have kids competing in the junior summer & winter series, you'll know that Bolton Tri Club is always represented by many juniors..... This has been through our ability to invest in our junior coaches. The funds come from Rivington. The revenue also allows the club to subsidise a junior aquathon, duathlon & triathlon each year.....

For the kids alone we must be allowed to host Rivington... Please email our sports minister....

when will tri england become involved.since triathlon came to the uk it has had battles,.but on the whole it is now accepted by most councils.IT WILL BE A GOOD BET FOR LONDON 2012.SO WHY ARE WE STILL HAVING TO PUT UP WITH THIS NEGATIVE ATTITUDE.Sport is the one not only one thing this island of ours is good at,we should be proud of the small events like rivington tri,as well as the large events like IMUK/there has to be room for both or whats the point .IMUK will attract a lot of revinue for bolton for the next three years.RIVINGTON tri would have kept grass roots tri going for a lot longer.

please support this event.

"United Utilities said it chose Ironman UK because it was major organisation which was keen to work with the local community to promote reservoir safety."

I think we should also email the IMUK organizers to get details of how they will be working with the local community to promote reservoir safety...

Fecking ridiculous. I'll be emailing Mr Sutcliffe tomorrow.

Hear, Hear - email sent in support.
You are right that without these small events the sport will not survive.

Anyone south of Manchester fancy contributing?

I'm sure, even with all the recent negative comments on this forum about IMUK, that those travelling up from the south of Manchester for IMUK, will enjoy the hospitality, support and friendliness in Bolton...... (This is a recurring compliment featured in the Rivington feedback)

Therefore, please help!!!

Anyone listening?

Surely Tri swimming emphasises that swimming in reservoirs is dangerous ?

Hence we wear wet suits and have safety boats all over the place ?

Absolutely rubbish ruling and it will have B*gger all effect on people going for a dip in a reservoir on a hot day.

If people drown - they drown - sad but you cant protect everyone all of the time. Chances are that they are more likely to kill themselves on the road - but I've never seen anyone say - for gods sake - keep your car at home.

British Triathlon should be out there leading the way and liasing with the government. Get Gordon Brown to tell UU where to stick their stupid ideas.
