Phil. I am in awe.
And I'm dabbing at my eyes with a tissue.
No dust here...just plucked heart strings!

"After crossing the line, I walked immediately towards the athletes area. When you watch the finishing videos everyone else milks the moment, kisses the ground, waves to the crowds…etc. But me: cross line, walk off. I don’t know why. I guess I was just on a mission, and once the mission ended I was off and out of there. It wasn’t a conscious decision, and I didn’t mean anything by it. I think it was just a side effect of being so singularly focused. "

I have felt the same both times; relief. You picture the moment in your mind a thousand times in the year before the event....if it's not a carbon copy you feel cheated, at least subconsciously. This is what I put it down to.

As for wives....I take mine for granted. After laying on a stretcher for the best part of two hours in the tent, getting numerous IVs, I finally left the recovery tent to meet my wife who was sitting by the fence on the curb, in one of those plastic ponchos they give-out. She looked like a refugee. Thanks to some friends, she knew what was going-on, but it was all I could do not to cry when I hugged her.

I'm welling-up a bit just going though that moment in my mind again.

My emotions didn't stretch to relief. Just anger. I was bl00dy fuming, but didn't (at the time) know why.

We are very lucky mate. I honestly don't know how people do something like IM without the support I have had. Those are the real Ironmen (*cough* badger *cough*).

Can I join the 'Lucky Bloke with Great Wife" club please?

My wife & I did our first IM together.

She knew she wouldn't be there to see me finish so went to the trouble of arranging a card to be handed to me when I finished to congratulate me. Like you guys I just felt numb with relief at the finish but blubbed when I read her words before being directed to the medical tent where I spent the next 4 hours.

By contrast Mrs. S finished her first IM with no-one there to greet her, got told where I was then had to run about getting my stuff and the car before driving us back to the hotel! Rolling Eyes

I'm so glad I had the forethought to arrange a bottle of champagne to be in our room when we got back, although we only managed a few sips each before crashing! Smile

We should pool them, and lend them out to needy folk (*cough* badger *cough*). Wink
