Hi

I am thinking of entering Wetherby Olympic on the 2nd May but family local to the area say the river is very low and they dont think its deep enough to swim in.

Does anyknow know if it will be a tri as if it reverts to a Duathlon I'm not bothered about entering (its mainly for OW practice)

Thanks

Yes, I did this a couple of years ago, the race would have been turned into a Duathlon if the river had been any lower. Luckily for me the swim went ahead but was so low at the turn point that everyone waded around the buoy.

I would suggest that you will find yourself out in front on race day as you would be turning up on the wrong Bank Holiday.

The race is on the 30th May. Plenty of time to rain !!!!

Now Tim, you know you aren't allowed to wear your Barbie armbands! Best you be brave and try without as you can't wear them for IMA. Wink Heart

Any improvements in the river levels? Having done Etape Du Dales yesterday, to my great pain I can confirm that it rained over the weekend which should hopefully help a bit.

Gary,
Can confirm it rained in N Yorks over the last few days. Did this event last year and was swimming along, breathing to the near bank and saw a pair of feet run past me.... I ran round the turn around buoy. The river is shallow in places, but not everywhere. It was cold too Wink

How was etape? (I found it a spiteful ride tbh).

Coops!

Hi John

Running along a shallow river is my type of swim unlike the possible non-wetsuit Ironman that you may have to face. I will take Emily's arm bands if we go non-wetsuit at Roth although we should be OK.

As for the Etape, my comments are on the Etape thread. You comment of 'spiteful' will fit in nicely with everybody else. First time for a long time, that my mental strength has wavered and I am glad that there were no possible get outs for me such as a train or support car. I would have probably not taken them up but even thinking about it was not good.

I kept telling myself that if I was going to do an Ironman in July, there was no way that I could bottle the Etape.

Any news on the river? Can I assume that from this weeks rainfall that no issues with the water level being too low?? Or does that mean it is now too cold??

Sure it will be as fine as last year.
I have raced here x2 and thought it was cold on both occasions Smile

That has to go down as my least enjoyable triathlon, ever !!! Absolutely no fault of the organisers as no event problems but I was just so cold.

We knew what was going to happen when the heavy rain started at the pre-race briefing. May have been wearing a wetsuit but I was still freezing.

The water was 13 degrees so have been in worse but I struggled to get over the start line. The current was too strong for my rubbish swimming. It seemed to take about an hour to the turn round point and about 10 mins back with the current.

I was frozen at T1 and went out with far too little gear on. Got past first roundabout and went for my drink and lost my bottle in the road so managed to do entire race without drinking.

I was not wearing gloves and my hands were frozen. Using TT bike with shifters on the tri-bars. On way back from Boroughbridge, my fingers could not change gear as I had lost all feeling so had to take hand off bar and use full weight of hand to push to change gear.

Got back to T2 and I could not take off my helmet as so cold. My fingers just could not put the minimal pressure on it so ran out of T2 to find a spectator to do it for me. How embarrassing !!

Ran the first 3 miles with 2 blocks of ice inside my running shoes.

Should be interesting to see my results - could be my slowest swim ever although the bike/run were not to bad.
