Date: Saturday 24th August 2013 (Aug Bank Holiday weekend), and yes its Saturday not Sunday. It's a bullsh1t free zone event, so you can register up till 9pm on Fri night if you want to. Pardon my english.

Good news that the superb National Diving Centre swim venue seems to be the permanent swim base Cool and the new run/T2/camping venue for 2012 went down well at Taurus Crafts near Lydney.

Heres a link to last years thread and the prev year, so you can check the good feedback:

Found a great pic of the swim venue at the National Diving and Aquatic Centre (NDAC) near Chepstow: http://www.ndac.co.uk/

notice how small stuff is. this really is a long way down. we started from the bottom end of the pontoon, and swam 2/3 way up, well past the floating island. 4 laps.

that track up the side is the looong climb up to T1, which is at the top car park in the far distance Cool

the sheer sides keep on going down and down, to over 70m depth! Theres stuff like a Boeing, helicopter and a tank been craned down there, for the divers to play with in the crystal clear waters! (excellent for following feet!) Wot a venue!!! Shocked Exclamation

newarkTricky commented in 2011 how wonderful it is to put all that swim coaching stuff Rolling Eyes into practice in the clear water.

The bike course is quite adventurous, just being one big lap for the half ironman distance Little woody, and 2 Laps for the full Big Woody ironman. A complete tour of The Forest of Dean (and Wye Valley) which is the 'english bit' on the wrong side of the Severn Wink FOD is not a place you tend to pass through as it's out of the way, so will be an undiscovered gem for many of you. Bike course is nearer 100 miles than 112 but you will be thankful, as I came 3rd Rolling Eyes but it still took 5 1/4 hrs split!

This epic course is not as tough as 2011 and previous yrs but still rewards strong cyclists and may find out the weak. Its more unremmitingly undulating without any real steep hills, with just the infamous English Bicknor to negotiate, with its kick at the end. Consider the fairly tough bike course as even more value for money Wink

The multi lap out and back mainly trail run is great for keeping an eye on your competitors Twisted Evil
Run course is a cracker, and very largely on traffic free sections. it has a couple of wee bumps in it Wink so unless your Putt Putt or daft, treat them as nice guilt free sections to take some Power Walk breaks to recover Very Happy so you can run the rest harder and more consistently (i.e. without dying nearer the end - PW breaks really pay off in sustainability later on)
Run course was unfortunately hastily rearranged in 2012 due to temp road works, so thats why it may appear a tad short, tho the laps worked better for spectators. Hopefully 2012 will be a wee bit longer or an extra lap for TBWers..

More reasons to enter:
1. Early bird entries before 2013: For TBW 150 from the 1st if November till the 31st of December so its still usually excellent value compared to owt else.
2. Includes free camping on the days b4 and after the event, at the Taurus Crafts/T2 venue. Makes it a very very cheap IM weekend (and with a good atmos) if you want it that way. Or there's plenty of B&Bs etc. There's Taurus Craft activities n cafe at T2, and a deluxe lard-van, and also grub and a posh clubhouse at the NDAC T1.
3. Run is half off road on tame trails (and hardly any traffic of course) so your legs don't get trashed as much and you recover quite quickly after the race.
4. support grass roots IM in the UK - use it or lose it Exclamation
5. Forest of Dean is a great area to visit too eg Symonds Yat, Tintern Abbey, Eagles Nest, Offas Dyke (Devil's Pulpit above Tintern), Chepstow Castle and old town/bridge, Severn Bridge viewpoints.
6. It's an epic course, particularly the swim and bike are spectacular (and I'm no swimmer Wink)
7. The event is a cult classic for those in the know. Cool Beats me why more folks don't take advantage of it. Check the unanimously positive feedback from all previous threads

hmmm.... 2 weeks after a 100 mile run and 12 days before a 12 hour bike ride + 15 days before another long course race. Just worried about getting injured by doing too much and then missing it all...

I do like the free camping before and after and of course the price. Very tempted!

most folks rack the eves b4, but you can rack on the day too, like i say, its a bullsh1t free zone, no unnecessary rules n regs.

yes there is included free transport avail for pre racked athletes n spectators to / from T2 <--> swim etc.

NDAC is just up the road for me (maybe 15 minutes) and I've done OW swim practice there.

However it is bloody freezing! Does it ever get anything approaching pleasant?

Seriously, I'm a skinny tw@, and I've never noticed it being that cold, anymore than anywhere else. No bother at all. Maybe its heated up later in summer cf when you've swam in it. ?
Or your a Soft Southern Jessie Razz
