I read today that over a thousand people have died building the stadiums in Qatar - I don't gave a reliable source for that - if this is the case, it's time to prosecute all those in the system...

i think that figure comes from a finding in a 2014 ituc report (on migrant labour abuse in qatar) that 1200 workers had died since the world cup was awarded to qatar (in 2010), rather than during building works for the word cup (iyswim)

Sounds about accurate (not right obviously).

Not making excuses in any way, but people in the Uk have absolutely No idea of the scale of work going on in Qatar in construction. Almost the entire inhabitable area is under construction - the place makes Dubai look like an oasis of calm.

You very sensibly found the correct definition of the dreadful death rate and yet the papers try and turn this into a football thing as a convenient way to try and drum up support.

And they expect support from an institution that has just re-elected Blatter.

PS Its complete b*llocks. Most of the stadiums are still on paper, only one has started construction properly.

Have a look at this Washington Post article.

I think that the image in the article is particularly powerful.

You are right, and not in any way making excuses for them, the construction going on in Qatar is over 1,000 bigger than the Olympics in London. The entire Doha region is under construction.

Modesty prevents me saying on a public forum what I think of Qataris in general but it would be infinitely worse if I were not a white Anglo-saxon male.

Given that the US authorities claim jurisdiction over ANY banking transaction denominated in USD, I wonder how much longer the $ will be the currency of choice for bribes and money laundering? Rolling Eyes

Maybe there's still hope for the Euro after all Wink
