Some years back I gave serious consideration to this, but never had enough money. I am now giving it serious consideration again, but will need five years to get fit enough, the money etc.

Anyhow a question to those in the know:

Having lumbar spinal stenosis my doctor tells me not to run, but I can walk fast. What is the slowest speed you need to be able to maintain to keep ahead of the camels? I think that it used to be a couple of miles per hour but I don't remember and don't see it on the uk website. ( I do realise this is over sand and rock in 50degrees).

Did MDS in 2013 and can guarantee that you can walk the whole thing if you are reasonably fit and stubborn. My tent had a range of entrants from the tenth place finisher to a guy who walked every step......that's the beauty of this race. I started the first few stages running until my shredded feet and inability to keep any calories down took their toll.....ended up doing a lot of walking over the last couple of days and was way in front of the camels.....if it wasn't likely to end in divorce I would definitely go back again.
Get some good poles....take a wide variety of food....take plenty of pictures and enjoy it

Can't disagree with any of the advice given thus far, I did it this year & just a few things to add:

- Patrick Bauer seems intent on making the race tougher, this year was the longest ever & stage one was just brutal (they extended the cutoff because 10% of the field were still out there)
- I thought I was in the shape of my life and still walked a lot, don't underestimate the effects of heat, terrain & fatigue
- Packing light is key as is being organised.
- Most manage not to shred their feet with carefull footwear choice & taping.

In my tent only 2 out of 8 of us finished, I was a "runner" and the other walked every step. Those that dropped out were either under-prepared, chasing cutoff & got lost or gradually succumbed to fatigue.

I think its an amazing race & will probably go back again in a couple of years. However next time if I need a drip on the long day I won't struggle on through the marathon stage wasting more than the 2 hour time penalty I was trying to avoid and then maybe won't collapse in the med tent & have the IV anyway
Stupid

Thanks all

I will admit to have been reading the race regulations again, and looking at pictures of kit. Sad I know.

My strategy is simple, walk, enjoy the moment, have fun. (Keep in front of the camels).

brick, thanks for pointing out navigation, something I must work on.

I will admit I have wondered about Sod's law and trampling on a snake that is having a bad day. Well it would be having a bad day at that stage, quickly followed by me probably.

All part of the fun.

I nearly ran into/over this cheeky little fella!

There's a half distance race in Fuerteventura and a full distance race in Peru.
