yet again its very simple to check. Any coach should know! informed sport do batch testing of supplements, go on their website, check item and batch number and you should be ok but its still at your own risk. You are also warned by UKAD that you take supplements at your own risk, there is no defence although im sure they'd be more sympathetic if you could prove 100% that it was the product.

On paper, simple. In reality, not so much.

One athlete received only a 6 month ban as she still had some unopened salt tabs that were proved to have the substance in them. I don't recall the batch testing statement.

Some supplement manufacturers test all batches, some don't. It is a minefield for those who rely on sport for income. A pro cannot stop at an IM feedstation and lookup a gel batch online during a race.

personal needs bag...and carry their own....

but i do have some sympathy...

yep its certainly tough, but thats the life of a pro. You simply must have strict liability otherwise everyone will be claiming tainted beef and salt tabs and it wouldn't be worth the AD authorities pursuing anything.

It isn't just pros though, anyone competing in sport could have the same issues, just that pros are more likely to be tested so perhaps should take extra precautions with the nutritional companies they use.

There is no way any pro could get every batch of the supplements they use tested, far too expensive and not likely to be done very quickly. I feel for athletes that do get caught out like this, especially if it is proved beyond doubt that a supplement is tainted. They are responsible for what goes in the body but as so much of our daily food in processed none of us really know what is in it, and we could all get caught out.

The best any of us can do is only use companies that regularly test batches of the supplements they produce to make sure they don't contain anything that is on the WADA banned substance list. There are very few companies that do that though unfortunately.
