Family commitments. Overtraining and injury. Spending too much money on gear. Work/life balance. Bragging about your accomplishments (enough/not enough). Getting enough sleep. Convincing yourself that you don't actually need a second TT bike. Or a 4th set of wheels. Spending less time online and more time training.

And of course the colour and taste of the water if starting in 4th wave or later, but that's not in training (if it is you need to find a new OW swim place).

But the ultimate triathlon training challenge is having kids.

Taking advice from strangers on a forum Smile

Rather than things to avoid, of which there are several, focus on having a bit of fun - it is a fab sport for that

Becoming addicted to the training and knowing when to back off and rest.

The weekly food shopping bill may increase.

Challenges for the new Triathlete (me 18 months ago)

1. Thinking that the 13 year old road bike that was top of the range in its day will be enough..... by the time you do your 2nd or 3rd Triathlon, you will lust after the latest carbon TT bikes with carbon aero wheels
2. Running injuries, even if you try to ramp up running training slowly, you are almost certain to have some niggling injuries for the first year or so - if you do get mild pain in knees, feet or hips make sure you ease off running for a bit and train in the pool or on the bike
3. Your swimming technique is rubbish and you will spend months trying to eliminate bad habbits and correct your head position, breathing, catch, pull, leg position and kick.
4. Underestimating the amount of time that you spend browsing forums and researching kit, nutrition, exercise plans
5. Grief you get from your teenage kids about your mid life crisis... I mean what would they prefer, that I buy a Porsche (cheaper then triathon)
6. Your other hobbies/sports become history
7. Projects/DIY plans become history
8. Buying an entirely new wardrobe twice in the space of 18 months
9. Pull of the "Ironman" - you will want to know if you can do it, you will then convince yourself that you can do it, you will then convince yourself that you can do it in under xx hours, and before you know you will have paid 400 to enter one (or 2 in my case)
10. Intercepting the post and deliveries before your partner, wife or husband sees how much is being delivered
11. buy bikes from the same brand, in similar colours, that way your partner, wife or husband may not notice the growing collection (however, teenage sons are not so easily fooled, so bribery may be required)

In regards to 10. - my 6 year old daughter now recognises the Wiggle branded deliveries and says "aawr..." since she then knows it's not for her.

11 works well though.

Can't afford another bike enthusiast in the house.
